It seems they are much the same and as with all drugs are not without side effects of course. I use Rimadyl for easier dosing (no danger of giving too much, simply break tablet and give required amount). Rimadyl also needs to be given more frequently so if there are any adverse reactions it will be out of the system quicker and Metacam can be given- not sure what you'd in the reverse situation. I've also seen Metacam make guineas drowsy/lethargic etc which wasn't good, but the upshot is that the side effect of no painkiller at all is almost certain death so I know what I'd do if I had no choice and had to give Metacam! Read the contraindications for any drug, they're all quite scary! You just don't see them when you get a prescription, just a white label on a bottle...
