If you need to rehome your guinea pig(s) you may wonder whether to rehome them yourself or hand them to a rescue that may have more contacts than you.
If you rehome them yourself you are responsible for any homechecks, and may have to deal with either timewasters or people that you find unsuitable.
If you decide to take them to a rescue often they are full and it may be some time before they can take them- let the rescue know that there is a possibility you might need some rehoming as soon as possible. Reputable rescues will ensure the guinea pig(s) leave them in the best condition possible, you should ask the rescue their policies on rehoming; these might be:
What do you ask of potential adopters regarding cage size/bedding/care? All answers will comply, at least, with the Animal Welfare Act, many rescues ask for over and above these recommendations.
If you are rehoming your guinea pigs yourself then some questions you might want to ask are: Where will the guinea pigs be living? The accomadation must be 4 foot by 2 foot minimum for 2 guinea pigs (or 120 cm by 60cm) to comply with the Animal Welfare Act. What bedding will you be using? Guinea pigs often react or become sensitised to Wood shavings. What experience of guinea pigs do you have?
A list of the guinea pigs' current diet is also useful. Pass on any medical problems that you have had with the guinea pig and details of your vet for future records and references.
