An abscess is a pocket of pus that is either thick and and lumpy or quite fluid with small lumps in it. It is white/creamy in colour and depending on age can be very smelly. They can occur anywhere on the body including the mouth and jawline but all of them need lancing and flushing. Anaesthetic should not be needed but at the end of the day if your vet feels more confident using anaesthetic then a whiff of gas is safer than a slip of the knife, particularly if the abscess is located near a vein. Now isn't the time to try and educate your vet , now is the time to look after your guinea's best interest When the abscess is lanced it must be kept open and healing must happenfrom the inside out so that no toxins are left inside. If this happens it will need reopening. Guineas heal at different rates and I've had the misfortune here to have the fast healing guineas with abscesses who need 'opening up' daily almost. If the wound heals over and you can't flush it go back to your vet so they can lance it.
