All abscesses need flushing, however there are several ideas about what to use.
Do NOT use Hibiscrub or Hydrogen Peroxide. Hydrogen Peroxide is a good skin disinfectant but should not be used on abscesses. It will clean the crater initially and is good at destroying the unwanted bacteria but will not allow the good bacteria to establish themselves and therefore will prolong healing for too long.
The company that make Hibiscrub clearly state that it must NOT be used in the body cavity, only for washing surgical equipment and tables. Also as an EXTERNAL skin disinfectant.
Technical data about Hibiscrub:
* Avoid contact with eyes and rinse with water if contact occurs * Contains chlorhexidine gluconate * Not for internal use
This preparation contains chlorhexidine gluconate in the form of an alcoholic solution.
The body is very good at establishing bacteria at the correct rate and times, Hydrogen Peroxide and Hibiscrub impede this.
However the body will need some oral antibiotics to help fight off any toxins. We use Baytril at RGPR at the dose rate of 0.4ml x2 daily (the smallest guinea we used this rate on was 2lb in weight).
More recently we have successfully flushed the wound with a solution of Baytril and Hartmans Solution. At all times healing must be happening from the inside of the wound out.
