My guinea pig doesn't gnaw on anything at all, I provide branches and wood toys, but he just eats his food and hay and doesn't bother with anything else. Does this mean he needs regular checks to make sure the molars are wearing down?Gnawing does not promote the correct action for wearing down molars, only hay and grass does that. It will wear down the Incisors but so will 'normal' eating. At RGPR we have noticed a higher incidence of tooth problems in guinea pigs that that have been on a low hay diet. After a few day here guinea pigs start to eat more hay because they can't fill up on anything else! Dental problems only occur in my own pigs when something else is going on in the mouth ie an abscess/snapped tooth. Rescue guineas have dental problems extremely rarely too. If you have a gnawing guinea then apple sticks/twigs are enjoyed as are willow, but the best thing is some coarse hay such as Oat which is nearly all stem and not enjoyed by all guinea pigs. www.sphsupplies.co.ukand www.thehayexperts.co.uk have different varieties available.
