How does dry food affect the urinary tract? The dry food that guinea eats can have a bearing on his/her health; dry foods that contain colourings (even EEC permitted and particularly the Sunshine yellow one) are known to affect all pets. Nothing has been proven but the CCT noticed that a high incidence of their patients with problems in the urinary tract were being fed on food containing colourings, when the colourings were removed from the diet the guinea pig recovered. Colourings will also mean the urine has a false positive reading for diabetes, diabetes is rare in guinea pigs and any medication given as a result could kill or seriously harm them. There are lots of foods without colourings and interestingly enough one company has not used colourings in any of their new foods since there was some question over the use of colourings in their main brand (which is still available ) The ideal dry food for maintenance is Cavy Cuisine (available from www.sphsupplies.co.uk )
