Post castrate abscesses occur in some boars that have been castrated. Whilst some situations may heighten the chance of one occuring sometimes they happen to even the best surgeon.
When you bring your boar home from his castrate feel the area around the genitals to get used to what 'normal' feels like. If this changes (usually a hardening of the area and then a lump can be felt) then take him back to your vet.
Antibiotics MUST be given with all those toxins in the body. I give 0.4ml of Baytril x2 daily. If the abscess is big enough it should be lanced and drained, from then on it is important that it is flushed at least once daily with Hartmans solution. I use a Syringe (without needle), a Canula (I prefer blue) fitted onto the end of the syringe to make flushing deeper and Hartmans solution.
Antibiotics should not be relied upon to get rid of abscesses, it is important that it is flushed and allowed to heal from the inside out.
