There is a lot of debate about this. I believe that some parasites can survive in hay that is damp. They are kept hydrated by the water for a couple of weeks only but this is long enough to lay their eggs on your guinea and for the larvae to feed off guinea. Some varieties of adult parasite do not need to live off blood which enables this to happen. Other varieties however are guinea pig specific and probably couldn't survive in damp hay.
