It goes without saying that a vet should be found before they are needed, but this in itself can be difficult. Firstly find out where and who your local guinea pig rescue are, a guinea pig specific one if possible. Ask them which vet they use (the person, not the practise) and why. Also ask them what they use them for, what ops they have done on guineas and what their success rate is. You can expect a competent surgeon to have a good rate of success on doing castrates and bladderstone ops. But do ask how many of these ops they have done, whilst 2 out of 2 successes is a good rate it doesn't demonstrate experience! Also ask if the rescue would trust their vet to diagnose fungal/parasitic/hormonal hairloss correctly.
