A sebaceous cyst is a lump just below the surface of the skin that will start off by feeling like a hard bump and continue to grow (usually). They contain a toothpaste like material that can be white or grey.
The material they contain is Sebum.Sebum is produced by sebaceous glands of the epidermis.
They need to be 'removed', so that there is no danger of them 'exploding' and leaving a massive crater. No need for anaesthetic, a little local may be given. The cysts is opened and the contents 'squeezed out' and the whole area should be cleaned to prevent 'refilling'. No anaesthetic is needed.
Unlike abscesses I have never had a smelly cyst but if they do it is likely they are infected and a course of Baytril should be given along with further cleaning.
