One of the first signs of Osteodystrophy is bunny hopping followed by difficulty in prehending (picking up) food. There is this definite will to eat followed by the inability to eat. Even food that reaches the mouth is 'spat out' sometimes depending on the dental conditions. If teeth have worn right down then it won't be possible to chew certain foods.
This has been misdiagnosed as Scurvy (which is incredibly hard for a guinea pig to get if they are being fed fresh food x2 daily), vitamin and mineral defiecency. Whilst OD is a metabollic disorder in some Satins and vits and minerals are involved it is irreversible, unlike vitamin and mineral defiecencies.
It can be helped if it is in the early stages but will not be cured and the outcome is the same.
If related groups of Satin guineas are dying and have similar symptoms (mobility issues and difficulty eating) there is a possibility that it is Osteodystrophy. All that can be done is to mek guinea comfortable and pain free.
