The majority of pet shops have made an effort to improve things for their animals while they are in the shop- things like not housing guineas with rabbits.
However, when you take a look at the bigger pigture all is not rosey. I can only speak for local shops that I have been to when I say I have seen good, bad and could do better.
Quarantine leaves a LOT to be desired in some shops I've seen.
Some will help out people that are having a hard time looking after their pet, Pets @ Home are not the first company to take in 'rescues' .
Suppliers to pet shops vary currently because the law allows. A large chain usually has a supplier that will supply only them (so possibly increasing the risk of inbred pigs), looking even further afield than that to the people that supply the suppliers and things get grotesque, nothing less.
In Reading there are 2 independently run pet shops that frequently send people to me and to the sites for information. Both supply Oxbow products, one got both Oxbow products and Burns products in at our request- not to mention the Rabbit Royale in Pet Packs and bales of Just Grass and Medibed and hay!
The other has taken our advice to stock bigger cages, though unfortunately they can only find indoor cages at the moment which meet Animal Welfare Act sizes.
There's good and bad in everything, rescues, breeders and pet shops.
